PENALTY Page 28

He heaved a deep sigh.

Nothing Fighters,
I was about a half hour late last night- my apologies. In penance please accept this follow up page of my yet-to-be-titled comic- if you have any idea's let me know in the comments. I'm making it up as I go so it was fun to try and follow up from last week. At first it felt a little like the end of a Flash Gordan Episode in which everyone is in extreme peril and then are mysteriously better in the next episode. However, I managed to pull it in a direction that I like (my favorite part are the racing stripes on "man who need's a name's" super-sweet mullet). I left it rough for consistency with yesterday's post, because I haven't taken the time to edit those panels yet. If I continue, I might try my hand at inking them. Also, you'll get to know a little bit more about "woman who needs a name's" powers and a bit background. Until then... to be continued.

Let me know in the comments what you think about it so far... and if you want more.

Page 27

...and then he saw it.

Yep. Kinda knew i'd be pushing it today, the parents and I were out until almost 11. I really tried to make it though. There were a lot of cops on the road this today so i was inspired to do some sort of crime comic... but then I decided to blow up Mexico via alien tripod walkers. Every good story needs at least one big twist. In efforts to be as polite as possible about the time, I'm posting this without even looking at... so it should look pretty awesome. Let me know what you think.

Our weapon is: "He heaved a deep sigh."

Buffalo

My internet is having problems, so I will be brief and try to add some more later.
It was a beautiful day and I knew I was going to make my piece the purple buffalo, and while sitting on the front porch it occurred that I have sidewalk chalk. So Jack and his Grandma and I set to work.
My sidewalk is not ideal for fine art chalking, but it turned out ok. I really like Atreyu's face the best in the piece.  I guess I'm on a kick of trying out media that I haven't used very often.  I just found some foam board at work that I might try to work into something sculptural soon.

Your weapon for tomorrow is "and then he saw it."

Red Cloak

I had a million different ideas today for this but decided on a lil' red riding hood theme. Then Kelly asked me to make her sexy so this is what you get. Best I can do with oil pastels... especially working as small as i did (a clear error in judgement).

Seeing as the entire page 26 is about Atreyu having dreams about them and that we are going to probably see some tomorrow at the zoo... your weapon is Buffalo (purple or not, it is up to you).

Growl

So....   watercolor.  It asn't exactly been my best friend in my time as an artist, but i love what a skilled hand can do with it, and i want a skilled hand.  I didn't give myself enough time (as always) but the idea, if not the total effect that I wanted, is here.  I love this first description of Gmork on page 24.  For those of you reading at home, Adam and I downloaded a .pdf version of the book so that we would have the same version, same page numbers and all that, but if you have the chance to purchase The Neverending Story - the book- DO.

I know that the post is a little less growl than it could have been if I had gone with a picture of Wolvie, but i didn't like most of my sketches of him.  The mouth was always wrong.  In this one i wanted simple and stylized meets cosmic clouds.  if I was better at watercolor, I would have more cosmic in the clouds.  I'm going to force myself to use the medium more so that I will get better.

Your topic my brother is "Red Cloak"

the beginning of an unknown journey

I went a different route with this the I thought I would go. My first instinct was get all Frank Frazetta 'on yo' ass' but then I got intimidated and chickened out.

However, oddly enough, inspiration came from the I got from some responses back from the 9 resumes i sent out this morning. While i only heard back from three and one of them was to say they currently weren't hiring, I finally feel like I'm gaining some momentum on this job hunt because two firms want to set up interviews with me- Brandimage in Chicago and Nesnadny + Schwartz based in cleveland. I hope there is some movement soon because I'm itching to get started.

Anyways, I started the drawing intending it be of me starting my journey into the working world- the beginning of an unknown journey. However, after fighting with perspective for a while and hitting a brick wall as to how to actually show what i wanted, it gradually moved towards a couch potato Genesis story. The plan was to watercolor it all campy sci fi but I wanted to get it up before I fucked it up. We'll see if I get the balls to actually color it tonight.

In honor of the forshadowing and first discription of Gmork... your topic for tomorrow is: Growl!

Monstrous

I really hoped that I would get some kind of great storm picture today and maybe do something with it or submit it as is, but it didn't happen.  When I took this picture out in front of the thrift store, I loved how quickly the atmosphere took the background.  I saw something lurking back there, and that is why I chose to do this.  Also, in case you are wondering...  it is a baby gorilla.

Your topic is in honor of the task that lies before Atreyu on page 23.  Great Quest, or more vaguely, the beginning of an unknown journey...

Page 21

Yo bro! Here's my response to "Tent Colony" I didn't want to go hoovertown route, so this is what you get:

Your topic is monstrous!

Page 20

Surprisingly, I had very few ideas for today.  I like what I chose though.  I don't know if having danger/space just seemed like something that i would have a lot of ideas for, or if it was because I had the day off and there was less pressure or what, but not a lot of creative juices flowing tonight.

For your topic:  I know that it is really addressed on page 19 of the book, but the setting remains the same on page 20.  Your topic is "Tent Colony".

Wilderness

I've wanted to try this out for a minute now.  Definitely lacking in finesse, but this is what windows movie maker and free audio editing software get you.

Page 19

Jeremy,
For wilderness I decided to redesign the wilderness survival merit badge because i always thought it was stupid.
Original:

Redesign:

I had to do it really fast so i may redo it soon.

EDIT:
I saw your post! Sorry for jumping the gun on dishing out the penalties! :) Your assignment is Danger!

Page 18

Conversation:

I knew I was gonna be late tonight, so I decided to finish it all the way (in other words, inking and shading).  It turned out ok for what it is.  I knew what my concept was going to be, but I didn't know where I would set it.  Turns out, it's pretty close to the City Diner in south St. Louis.

Topic for you (and I):  Wilderness.

In honor of tomorrow's impending apocalypse here is "eyes."

Frenzy.

I tried thinking of other ways to portray frenzy, but none of them seemed right.  I don't feel like it was as successful as I would have liked.  The largest red clump was unintentional, I also thought the green would appear a little brighter.  I don't like photoshopping my paintings more than a little brightening and white balance, unless it was a part of the plan.  The energy matched what I was looking for though.

I'm gonna give you an easy one this time:  Eyes

Yo! JereOMG,
Sweet painting with the Ivory Tower yesterday! You must of had some mad freetime. Here's my version of the racing snail (note to fellow fighters: please do not compare the two).

It's my first attempt at steampunk ever so let me know what you think. Next time I think I'll do the background too. also i think i'm going to work bigger next time. I feel the need to get off the 8.5x11.

Your topic is: Frenzy!

Page 14

This is what I saw when I read the page, although it is not exactly accurate.  I'm not very happy with the night-hob and his mount, but for spending about two hours at most on the painting, I'll take it.  I used acrylics and latex house paint.  After I was almost done, I realized that I have been afraid to paint murals on Jack's wall, but this has made me think I should probably just do it.  Of course, I'll use reference pictures for something as permanent as that.

Anyhoo, your topic is: Racing Snail.

Hey, two weeks down! (28 more to go-for this book...)

Page 13

Yo Jerm.
Here's my return to reality.

It's your typical love story:
Boy meets Girl
Boy falls in love with Girl
Boy gets bitten by Werewolf
Boy becomes Werewolf
Werewolf eats Girl
Werewolf realizes what he's done
...Werewolves inherits the earth

There is a ton of great imagery on page 14 and it was hard to choose.
Take it as you like but your topic is: "The Ivory Tower"

Page 12 Penalty

Jeremy,
Here's my punishment. the first thing i thought of was "There's a place in France where the naked women dance. There's a hole in the wall where the men can see it all." Not sure why but i thought it was hilarious. This is the result.

after i did it i realized that what i really wanted to do was down the rabbit hole... next time perhaps.

Page 12

So I had to upload to picasa, then it still wouldnt show up as an option, except from picasa web albums there is an option to blog the photo, so i did, and then of course after i went through all that, it shows up as an item in the web albums on blogger and im sure the uploading works now too.

hooray.

Your topic is returning to reality.

page 11

Here is my story for message:

On every pirate’s first birthday, since the days of yore
The Uncle Pirate visits him, according to pirate lore

He soars in on his flying ship and greets him with a yar
He writes him this message and puts it in a jar

I cannot wait until the day we sail the oceans blue
You can be the Capitan and I will be your crew

We’ll splish and splash and slosh the seas
And crawl and camp and climb palm trees

I’ll teach you the songs that all pirates should know
You’ll collect the treasure and count it as ye grow

So Happy Birthday Capitan Jack and I must say ahoy
Have lots fun and grow up strong but always stay a boy.

I know it's late. your word is "hole"... well both our word is hole i guess.

Campfire
I think this would be a fun project to do with a little more time than I had tonight, but it might also just be more annoying with more time.  I'm pretty satisfied with the pictures, all i would change is more precise positioning of the flames and maybe a backdrop made of cutout construction paper.

Your topic, that you are already working on because i told you earlier, is message or messenger.

ADDITION:  Extra pics.

Page 9

Jeremy!
Blogger went crazy last night and i wasn't able to post. Unfortunately, i'm at your house and gave you your word, "campfire," last night... so no excuses. :) Also, remember to re-post page 8/ whoosh because blogger ate it!

Here's my interpretation of colored:

Page 8

Yo Bro! Blogger crashed and took your post with it. in efforts to keep them in order just edit this one when you get the opportunity.

HERE IS THE ORIGINAL CONTRIBUTION
This is page one of a children's book called "Whoosh!"

I have noticed that we have been pretty narrow in terms of medium, so your topic is "colored".

Hey Bro here's Pirate or hero:

Your topic is: galvanometer

haha... not really. It is "whoosh!"

PENALTY Page 7

Since I failed to turn in my art by midnight, I am submitting this extra page as the penalty.  It's not much, but lemme tell ya, not having a day off from this sucks.

Page 6

I would have gotten it in too, if photoshop hadn't decided to save it in a weird place while i was rushing and not paying attention.  i might upload another version of this if i can pull off what i want to do.

Your assignment is:  "Pirates or Heroes"

Yo bro quick entry cause i'm short on time:

At the buzzer! ...You can tell i ran out of time.

This is what the word garbage makes me think about.  In looking up some information, i noticed that there are these patches in several other places around the world.  Awesome.

Your assignment:  "In that moment something inside him went click!"

Page 3

Yo Bro!
Here's my submission for "smoke":

I had a lot of fun with this one. It started out as a cowboy, became the Marboro Man's Revenge and now is an apocalyptic anti-smoking campaign. Using pencil is so much faster for me and it also has a lot more freedom, so you'll probably see more pencil in coming posts. I was going to paint this in photoshop but decided I'd rather get it up early. When and if I do I'll add it to this post.

Your challenge from page 3 is "garbage"

Page 2

"Fat Kid"
For almost the whole day I had no idea what I was going to do.I did some sketches, they sucked, and I felt certain that I would be just doing an illustration of bastion coming into the bookstore out of the rain.  Then I thought of a series of pictures about a fat kid who brings his luck dragon back to his hometown to torment some bullies, and I was like, oh yeah, sequential art.  And then i was left with not a lot of time.  So this is what you get.

For your assignment brother...
"Smoke"

The Cover / Page 1

Hey Jeremy,
In response to the first topic/challenge/idea/shizz:

Pretty straightforward. I wanted it to be a battle of good v. evil, black v. white, imagination v. nothing so i went with pen and ink. I must have done 50 versions but I liked this one best. Sorry for dragging it out until the last moment to post... hopefully in doing this every other day I'll get faster at it.

As for your shizz: On Page 1, Bastian enters the old book store from the rain and the author describes him as a "fat little boy" so take those words and run my brother.

Topic the first. From the cover.

The first topic may seem silly, but it is:

Neverending Story

Do what you will with that gem.

This is a long time coming.

This blog represents us always saying that we should find a way to force ourselves to be creative.  Really it's forcing each other to create, since we have bad habits when it comes to encouraging our own creative productivity.  We grew up with round-robin storytelling and drawing, staying up way too late and making art.  We have both spent a considerable portion of our adult lives to art of one kind or another, but have both fallen into the ruts of inactivity.  Luckily, we brothers are in the same place and time again, and we intend to capitalize on it.

Introductions are in order.  This is us as we are at the very moment.
Jeremy-  Former Art/Theatre/Film Student, now art hobbyist who shows great talent.  Husband and Father, there just isn't enough time in the day for wild creative endeavors anymore.  His artistic interests lie in short film, ink, pencil, sequential art, photography, sculpture, painting and animation.  Many of the media listed have only been accomplished rare few times-successfully- but Jeremy has a great desire for more, and his dreams never die.
Adam- Recent graduate of the Portfolio Center and lover of art in any capacity, he spends his time doodling, exploring and generally designing whatever he gets his hands on. Now looking for his place in the world and the design community, he hopes to use this blog to express and bring into focus his vast interests and diverse inspiration. He also has a birthmark that looks like Australia.

Our game is simple and open to much interpretation.  We will use a book as our game's frame.  Each page of the book represents a new day.  We will alternate days as the assigner of topic and artist.  One of us chooses a word, or theme, or really anything from the day's page and assign it to the other.  The artist, once assigned, has to submit something as a response.  The submission may be any medium the artist chooses, and as loosely or specifically tied to the assignment as he wishes.  That is the extent of the rules of the game.  There may be some refining as we go along, but for now, and perhaps always, this is all we need.

For our first book we have chosen The Neverending Story, by Michael Ende.  For us this story represents imagination.  The great evil that the heroes are fighting to thwart is the Nothing, the end of existence, the enemy of creation.  It seemed a valid choice.

And so it begins...
